When selecting a proper energy carrier for Recover-Me, a conscious choice has been made for Palatinose (isomaltulose).
Palatinose (isomaltulose) is a naturally occurring disaccharide (honey, molasses). Commercially, it is produced from sucrose (our common table sugar) by an enzymatic rearrangement. Like sucrose, Palatinose consists of two coupled monosaccharides, glucose and fructose. There is, however, an important difference: in Palatinose the two monosaccharides are coupled via a 1,6-glycosidic bond, which is enzymatically cleaved (hydrolysed) with much more difficulty than the 1,2-glycosidic bond in sucrose. As a result, Palatinose is only slowly digested, and thereby causes a low stimulus for insulin secretion (it is considered safe for diabetics).
Consequently, during physical exercise, energy production by the oxidation of fatty acids, released from adipose tissue, is stimulated.
The glycemic index (GI) is a value indicating how quickly a substance raises the blood glucose level. The slow metabolism of Palatinose is reflected in its low glycemic index of 32, compared with that of sucrose (67).
Several studies compairing Palatinose with higher glycemic carbohydrates have shown improvement in mood and memory, both in children and in adults.
The sustained energy supply by Palatinose is illustrated by the prolonged shape of its blood concentration response curve.
Another advantage of Palatinose is that it is a poor substrate for oral bacteria. The production of acid after ingestion is negligible, so that its consumption does not cause tooth decay. The tooth friendly claims for Palatinose have been approved in the USA by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and in Europe by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).
